Gabriel Hiester, Jr. (l779-1831), son of the German farmer and Pennsylvania legislator of the same name, was appointed Clerk of the Courts of Berks County in 1809, by Governor Simon Snyder. He then served there as Prothonotary (1811-1818). He was appointed Brigade Major, of the 2nd Brigade of the 6th Division of the Pennsylvania Militia, by General Daniel Udree (1809-1814), serving in that capacity in the campaign at Baltimore and Washington under the command of General Adams of Berks. He was appointed an Associate Judge by Governor William Findlay in 1819; and Surveyor General of Pennsylvania by Governor J. Andrew Shulze in 1824. He had been a presidential Elector for James Monroe in 1817 and again in 1821. He held the Surveyor Generalship until 1830, residing in Harrisburg until he died in 1831.
